Spring is here, and with it, another wonderful gardening season. That means visits to your favorite nursery and garden department. Such shopping can be a very relaxing, fun getaway. You'll almost always come away with ideas and inspiration, finding great opportunities to chat with staff, having gained knowledge, tips and having your questions answered.Supporting local businesses is always a "plus". Here are several nurseries that carry excellent merchandise and are located not far from Burien.
West Seattle Nursery is a great destination located on California Avenue. This quaint nursery has been around since 1983 and has an excellent variety of plants and a greenhouse and gift area. Special services are offered, which include tool sharpening, potting plants, pottery drilling, and plant care advice. The amazing staff here has a goal to provide excellent customer service, which you will find evident.
Zenith Holland Nursery, located in Des Moines, has served the area since 1908 on a two-acre historic property. Besides growing many of their plants, Zenith is a full-service retail nursery with a gift shop. Be on the lookout for their beautiful flower baskets that come out later in the season around Mother's Day. They offer a 10% military discount (show military I.D.). Wednesdays are Senior Day; if you're over 60, you can save 10% on purchases. (See website for exact info on these discounts).
Restoring Eden describes themselves as a "PNW nursery focused on fruit trees, berry shrubs, and exotic plants." They have an awesome variety of edibles, as well as roses, peonies, herbs, and other plants. If you plan on growing edibles, be sure to give them a visit. They're located off Military Road in SeaTac.
Kent East Hill Nursery is located on four acres; they pride themselves in having the largest outdoor plant selection in the Seattle area. "The nursery plant stock consists of blooming perennials, annuals for all seasons, evergreen shrubbery, deciduous trees, edible plants, privacy trees, and much more!" With a self-description like this, you'll want to visit them for sure. While there don't miss their indoor plant section or the gift shop.
Carpinito Brothers is always a delightful place to visit. Over 50 years ago, these two brothers started growing vegetables right in Kent, and today, with their sons, they operate their thriving family business. At this time of year, you will find an extensive variety of garden and nursery items, as well as bark and soil, which are offered in bulk. Later in the season (June through December), delicious produce (much of which they grow nearby in the Kent Valley) is available. Later in the fall, they feature their own "home-grown" pumpkins and fall activities at some of their other farm sites.
Watson's Greenhouse is a family-owned business that opened in 1984. There are two locations: Federal Way and Puyallup. They grow the majority of the annuals, planters, and hanging baskets that they sell. Their gift shops carry wonderful and unique items. The Federal Way store is quick and easy to get to, and nicely convenient. However, at some point, you'll want to visit the Puyallup location to take in their "32,000 square foot glass and steel greenhouse from Belgium".
Burien's own Growing Crazy is the place to go if you're looking to grow indoor plants. The store is beautiful and lush inside, and they specialize in everything having to do with indoor growing. This includes fantastic plants, pots, growing mediums, fertilizer, gifts, and much more. This shop is a real jewel to have in our own community!
