OSPI's New K12 Learning Standards - Community SURVEY Due by September 13

Washington OSPI just released their draft of new learning standards for K12 ELA, Math and Science. Significant changes are proposed. Community members (teachers, parents, students, anyone) are encouraged to review the drafts and provide comment.

From the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI):

OSPI has developed drafts of the revised learning standards documents for ELA, mathematics, and science to include updates to content, provide clarity in the language, and include prioritized standards.

Some of the proposed changes are as follows:

SCIENCE:

* Kindergarten standards require children to "communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment."

* Global Citizenship is presented from elementary school through high school. It teaches the vocabulary of climate change and controlling the impact of the human population, and aligns with the World Health Organization ideals.

* Three main areas of focus include Climate Science, Engineering, Environmental and Sustainability Standards.

MATH:

* New learning standard wants to establish Teaching Methods with key phrases such as "Flexibility" and "Exploring."

* New standards do not focus on rote memorization such as multiplication or division.

ELA (English Language Arts):

* Students can now “read self-selected texts.”
