New Highline Pirate Head Coach JT Jackson is finishing his first spring and summer training on July 31. The team began after-school workouts and training in May and has continued the daily routine through July. About 30 kids have been regular to the practices.
Coach Jackson carries much of the same philosophy as his successful predecessor, Deontae Cooper, now running-back coach for the University of Idaho Vandals. Jackson, however, has added a great emphasis on basics: drilling repeatedly on proper footwork, body position, place on the field, hand position, and how to think. The normal focus on scrimmaging was downplayed. “When you have D1 talent like Marquawn McCraney and others, they can just do it all naturally. But we want all our kids to be able to be in the right position and understand how to use their body, feet, and hands.”
The team will return in mid-August and begin the final push for the season. The Pirates have moved up to AAA this season (bigger and faster teams!). However, Jackson is confident they will compete well against the new challenge.
The Pirates open their season against the Mt. Rainier Rams on September 6 at Highline Stadium. This is a reinstatement of an old rivalry. It should be fun for the players and for the communities!
