Burien, Washington - At approximately 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, two young children were rescued from the King County homeless encampment located next to the Burien District Courthouse on 601 SW 149th St. One appeared to be a boy, and the other a girl. Both appeared to be under the age of 10 years.
We spoke with Councilmember Linda Akey who shared her photos with Burien.News. She stated,
“I am appalled to see children in the tent encampment in Burien. Thankfully, our service provider reacted quickly to rescue the children and get them to a safe place. I implore King County to close this encampment immediately.”
CM Akey, who lives nearby, drove past the encampment this afternoon and was shocked to see two children in a wagon outside of the encampment fence. Akey promptly called Kristine Moreland, the new homeless outreach service provider in Burien. Kristine was already on site, and was able to successfully remove the children from this King County sanctioned homeless camp.
It is unclear if this was a case of child trafficking. We have yet to hear from the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) to confirm any further details. We will update when we learn more.
We are grateful to Kristine Moreland’s quick action and her ability to bring these two very young children to safety.
At this point, there is nothing the Burien Council can do. It is entirely the responsibility of King County, and the county refuses to budge.
